St Petersburg, Russia
Founded by John Stein M.P. (1769 – 1814)
John established a porter brewery in Russia obtaining an exclusive license which deprived the Southwark firm Barclay, Perkins and Co of a lively trade. This enterprise was doubtless managed by his father, James of Kilbagie, who died in Riga on 15 August 1804.
In 1814 it was said of John – ‘a man entirely devoted to the service of his country wherever it did not interfere with his own interest‘.
