On 14th October 1786 John Stein became the registered owner of the Mary and Margaret of Kennet Pans. This ship was built at Kennetpans by James Strang.

She was a Square Sterned Carval Sloop and she had one deck and one mast, was 55ft 6in long and was 17 ft 11in wide, The depth of her hold was 10ft 1in and she was 67 1/3 tons.

On 27th June 1789 Joseph Wilson and John Forrester, Merchants, and Alexander Wishart, Shipmaster, all in Kincardine, became the registered owner of the Mary and Margaret.

On 4th May 1790 James Clark and John Marshall became the registered owners.

In December 1790, the Mary and Margaret was on a voyage from Dunbar when it was run down by an English Collier and totally lost.

Master for London Harris and Price, Agents.

2 Barrels and 2 Casks contg, 15½ Hundred weight Pork Chops 742 pieces weighing 20 Tons, 8 Hundred weight of Bacon, 2127 Barrels weighing 12 Tons 14 Hundred weight Pork, all which Bacon & Pork is cured with 128 Bushels of English Salt brought here from Bristol in the Rachel, William Scotland, Master, and Cocket of 3rd May last, and further Cured with 95 Bushels Scots Salt for which, as appears by Permit and Affidavit here lodged, the Scots Duty of 1 Shilling and 6d per bushel was paid at the Pans; And the difference betwixt the Scots and English Duty on said 95 Bushels of Three Shillings and 6 pence per Bushel, now due
here, is paid: & Oath is made to the Identity of all the  Salt,

No. 37, 9 Oct. In the Mary & Margaret of Kennet Pans, James Carswell Master, from Ostend, Alexander Bald for James Stein,

315 Quarters, Winchester Measure of rye, to be landed at Kennet Pans in the County of Clackmannan, that County being open for the importation of Rye at low duties, and Sheriff’s Certificate of the 6th of August last, here lodged the Duty whereof at 3d per Quarter is   3-18-9.

In pursuance of an Act, passed in the Twenty-sixth Year of the Reign of King

GEORGE the Third, Intitled, An Act for the further Increase and Encouragement of

Shipping and Navigation, John Stein Merchant at Kennetpans

District of Alloa, Parish and County of Clackmannan

having taken and subscribed the Oath required by the Act, and having sworn that

sole Owner of the Ship or Vessel called The Mary & Margaret of

Kennet Pans                                                          whereof James Carswell

is at present Master, and that the said Ship or Vessel was Built at Kennet Pans 

By James Strang, In the Year One Thousand Seven hundred and

 

 Eighty four                And Mr John Watson, Landwaiter

having certified to Us, that the said Ship or Vessel Mary & Margaret has One Deck

and One Mast: that her Length, from the Fore-part of the Main Stem to the

After-part of the Stern Post aloft, is Fifty feet six Inches

Her Breadth at the broadest Part, whether above or below the Main Wales, Seventeen

feet Eleven Inches her Depth of Hold Ten feet One Inch

and measures Sixty seven and One Third Tons; thats the

is a Square Sterned Carval Sloop has No Gallery, and No

Head; and the said subscribing Owners having consented and agreed to the above

Description and Measurement, and having caused sufficient Security to be given, as
